Early detection is always the key to the prevention of any disease, it is no different for gum disease if caught early and precautions and actions are taken.

It is estimated that more than half of the adult population of the United States alone has some form of periodontal disease. Gum Disease can be addressed and here are some very real ways that can be accomplished.

How To Keep Gum Disease At Bay

First and foremost is to put and keep in place a great oral practice which is absolutely vital to the prevention and reversal of some forms of gum disease. Additionally, brushing and flossing as instructed every day are your go-to’s for keeping gum disease on a leash and out of your mouth.

Drinking plenty of water is a must on so many different levels for our body, and it is no different for our oral health care. It is important for your mouth to produce saliva. In fact, saliva is what washes away the bacteria from your gums and your teeth. If you can’t get to water, or you don’t like a lot of water, at the very least, use some sugarless gum or throat lozenges to get that saliva stimulation going.

Another good idea, in more ways than one, is to get in the habit of just having a good diet. A nutrient rich diet is good for not only your body, but your teeth will say thank you as well. Your immune system will get a boost and you will slow down the progression of gum disease.

This is a big one for so many, but not always easy…. stop smoking! When signs of gingivitis show up, this may be the time to say, “hey, I quit”. It is true that a smoker’s gums are harder to heal, and they are more prone to infection.

Those regular 6-month regular dental checkups are suggested for a reason. It is so we can check on your oral health, which includes looking for any early signs of gum disease.
