You constantly hear how important it is to take care of your mouth. Despite knowing the recommendations regarding brushing, flossing, and professional dental care, many people are still lax in their oral care practices. Skipping out on any part of your oral care routine can significantly increase your risk of developing serious oral health complications. At North Atlanta Family Dentistry, we can help you to develop a good oral hygiene routine that will allow you to actively protect the health of your mouth.
The Importance of Good Oral Hygiene
Oral hygiene is important for many reasons. Good practices help to keep your teeth strong and your gums healthy. When you neglect your oral hygiene, you are at an increased risk for developing issues such as cavities and gum disease. Without treatment, these issues worsen over time, leaving you susceptible to tooth damage, gum disease, and even tooth loss. These issues can also impact your overall quality of life, affecting how you eat, your speech, and the quality of your smile. They can also impact your whole-body health. You can be faced with issues such as:
Oral Hygiene Habits at Home
Good oral hygiene starts at home. The American Dental Association recommends that you brush your teeth twice a day for two full minutes each time. When you brush, you should use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste. Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against your gums. Move your toothbrush back and forth gently, scrubbing the surfaces of your teeth. Make sure that you brush all of your teeth. You should also make sure to brush not just the fronts but the backs and the chewing surface as well.
The ADA also recommends flossing at least once a day. Take 18 inches of floss and wind it between your middle fingers until you have about 2 inches left between them. Move the floss carefully back and forth to work it between your teeth. Curve the floss around the edge of the tooth and gently scrape up and down to remove buildup. Repeat these steps for each space, using a new section of floss each time. It is also important that you do not forget to floss behind the backs of your very last teeth.
Professional Care for Oral Health
While a majority of your oral hygiene is performed at home, it is essential that you also have routine dental cleanings and exams. The ADA recommends appointments at least twice a year. Cleanings are performed to remove all buildup from the surfaces of your teeth, including the areas you may not be able to thoroughly clean on your own.
We can effectively scrape away even the most stubborn buildup to help you prevent cavities, gum disease, and other issues. During your exams, we look over the structures in your mouth to detect the presence of issues in their earliest stages, before you ever notice there is a problem. Typically, the earlier the issues are found, the less invasive the treatments need to be. In addition to visually inspecting your mouth, we also take X-ray images. These images allow us to examine the hidden areas of your mouth for optimal care.
