It’s only “normal” to occasionally get a craving for sugar because it tastes great. When it comes from natural sources, it fuels your body with the energy it needs.

However, when you have a nagging sweet tooth, then you may have a problem. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to curb this and maintain a healthy diet.

Avoid Foods That Are High On The Glycemic Index

Studies show that eating toast and orange juice for breakfast merely set you up to give in to your sweet tooth later in the day. This is because high-carb and high-glycemic foods stimulate the part of your brain that’s responsible for sugar cravings.

These foods include things like white flour, potatoes, and even popcorn. Instead of eating these foods, make sure you eat things like eggs, fruit, vegetables, and nuts. They’ll help stabilize your blood sugar and prevent your sugar craving.

Stay Hydrated

Many times, your sweet tooth happens because you’re thirsty. In fact, the symptoms of dehydration often mimic hunger. This is why you should drink a tall glass of water before reaching for something sweet.

Indulge Wisely
Sometimes there’s nothing you can do but enjoy something sweet. When you choose to indulge your sweet tooth, make sure you do so with a high-quality item as opposed to simply eating some processed junk food. This will enable you to enjoy a smaller portion and eventually your body will stop craving so much of it.

So instead of grabbing a chocolate candy bar from the store, enjoy a small piece of chocolate from a gourmet shop instead. Make sure you don’t eat it on the run, but that you slowly and deliberately focus on each bite too so you’re truly satisfied.

Since we all know that sugar isn’t the best thing for our teeth, it’s important to visit our dental office at least twice a year so that we can help you maintain a healthy smile. If you don’t already have an appointment set up for this, make sure you call and schedule one today.
